The t-test rite of passage
I like to use the independent sample t-test to introduce learners to inferential statistics. This test is used to compare whether the average value of one group is greater than another.
Such a test may sound pretty ho-hum and of limited use, but it’s the basis for a foundational analytics strategy, the A/B test. And its assumptions and diagnostics are similar to many other statistical tests, making it a great foray.
Random data is so, well, random
If you wanted to, you could practice statistics on random numbers. But I try not to depend on simulated datasets for teaching analytics for the same reasons a nutritionist would suggest not depending on supplements to get nutrients.
Much of the complexity of working with data has been laboratized away with randomized numbers. They’re, well, random, out of context.
I take great lengths to find interesting datasets that are good to practice on. You can find them below: click through to download my free t-test practice guide.
