I love teaching data using examples from everyday life. And what’s more quotidian than coins? Plus, the third week of April is National Coin Week.
Flipping a coin a simple experiment with two equally-likely outcomes that can be repeated many, many times with almost no effort.
That said, Excel can simulate way more coin tosses than you could ever perform in real life. This makes a great exercise for teaching some useful Excel features, along with the basics of probability.
In this exercise, students will learn about random numbers, conditional logic, and aggregation in Excel. You are free to use this exercise as you see fit.
