Most of you know this primarily as an Excel blog, but occasionally I love to give some behind-the-scenes looks. Usually, it’s about running an analytics business, covering topics like marketing, branding, and tips for transitioning into self-employment as a data analyst. Today, though, I want to share something a bit different: one of my favorite perks of being a digital, remote-friendly professional: housesitting around the world.
If you’re anything like me, travel is one of your passions. Experiencing new cultures, breaking out of routines, and refreshing your creativity… travel offers all these benefits and more. However, it’s no secret that travel can get pricey fast. Even when your employer covers the costs, work trips often limit your freedom to explore. So, I started wondering: is there a travel “cheat code” out there?
That’s when I discovered housesitting.

(Got to visit Monterey/Carmel, CA in February and watch a wonderful Himalayan cat)
After researching various options, I settled on Trusted Housesitters. I paid the application fee with no idea what to expect…and it turned out to be a game changer.
Trusted Housesitters allows you to exchange very modest labor (basically just caring for pets, looking after the property and cleaning up after yourself) for free accommodations. It’s perfect for those of us with flexible, remote-friendly schedules. If you’re already earning frequent flyer miles from work trips, this setup lets you use those miles to travel somewhere exciting without breaking the bank.
One of the best parts about housesitting is the authenticity of the experience. You’re not just staying in a hotel; you’re living in someone’s home, often alongside their pets. Personally, I prefer cat-sitting since it’s a bit less demanding, giving me more flexibility to explore. But if you’re a dog person, there are countless listings available. And yes, there are even listings with no pet care involved at all.

(Spring trip and catsit in Corrales, NM, just outside of Albuquerque)
I’ve found that hosts tend to be experienced travelers themselves. Many enjoy helping you explore and immerse yourself in their local culture. It becomes almost ambassadorial. You get insider tips and recommendations you’d never find otherwise.

(Great way to make lots of feline friends and coworkers!)
The listings aren’t limited to the U.S., either. Trusted Housesitters is based in the UK, so you’ll find numerous opportunities across Europe and around the globe. This year alone, I’ve enjoyed stays in California, New Mexico, and across the Midwest and soon I’ll be visiting Texas and Hawaii for the first time. Even closer to home, discovering new neighborhoods and cities within my own state has been incredibly rewarding.
There’s genuinely so much I could share about this fantastic experience. If you have questions or want more insights, please drop a comment, send me a message, or visit the official and unofficial message boards.
