Here are some overplayed topics in analytics social media:
- Keyboard shortcuts. They can help but are so insignificantly less important than learning to touch type, for example.
- “It’s not about the tools, it’s about understanding the problem.” Massive oversimplification in a world where business problems are in part tech problems.
- The importance of communication skills without giving actionable or maybe even measurable steps for doing so.
- Anything about “stakeholders.” We’re not vampire slayers. And why you making a fuss about business skills when you’re using business jargon?
- The importance of projects for learning/getting a job. I’m not doubting this but no one ever brings any supporting evidence here ironically.
- Encouragement to apply for a job you’re not qualified for. To be fair people probably do need to hear this, but maybe not every day?
- Squabbling over what Excel formula is best for a given task. Obviously there are multiple ways to do the same thing in Excel. That’s why we love it and you’re not breaking any barriers by suggesting an alternative.
Got any other candidates? Drop them in the comments. I may also update this list.
And maybe I’m being too harsh but seriously. I see these topics EVERY DAMN DAY and they weren’t really so profound the first time.
