Prior to this update all you had to do was right click on the date field in the pivot table and group it and you would get date fields grouped by year/qtr./month. I guess I see this added functionality in Excel 2016 as a minor improvement saving the user a couple of clicks of the mouse.

Thanks for the comment. True that manually grouping of fields was an option in older versions of Excel, but I do like that this feature eliminates possibility of user error.
And even tiny shortcuts repeated over extended periods of time can result in a meaningful time savings. Some users spend the majority of the workday on Excel so little things add up.
