One thing I’ve grappled with frequently on this blog is whether I am an “Excel blogger.”
It is probably increasingly clear that I do not primarily write about Excel. This is especially true because as a graduate student, I do not spend nearly the same amount of time in spreadsheets as I once had.
But this is just a matter of degree, not of kind.
Does a pure Excel practitioner exist in the world? One whose job ONLY requires the ins and outs of our beloved Office application?
You might find some roles that get close, but even they require at the very least that a) the person got the job in the first place and b) the person needs to manage his career.
Likewise, if no one has a pure Excel job… why pretend having a pure Excel blog?
From the beginning I have targeted personas, not topics. It is for people who want to tackle the everyday challenges of data management in a workplace — without being computer nerds.
It is for intelligent people who would be a great financial analyst but just need to know how the heck a VLOOKUP works.
It is for nurses and techs who got promoted to management and now need to figure out how the heck a budget works.
Nature is not grouped into disciplines. We all know that from our jobs. I hope to make that distinction in the blog, too.
Blogging for a person and a mission, not for a topic, is what I call “systems blogging.” Welcome aboard.
