Steve Blank’s famous dictum that entrepreneurs “get out of the building” is relevant to so many endeavors. Especially as analysts and professionals, how can we hope to do anything meaningful with data when we’re not familiar with the people and processes that generate that data?
Of course, getting out of the building can be a leisure when just putting a report together keeps you at work after hours. And while we can joke that being off a few figures here or there isn’t a matter of life and death, there is a breed of professional who supports those making life-and-death decisions: the healthcare administrator.
This term is a bit of a catch-all, but I like to say it’s the people who “keep the lights on” in a medical practice. Healthcare already carries so many technology expenses that software isn’t one of them. Security is also an issue so many IT desks are wary to let professionals use open source tool.
That leaves whatever’s left on a standard-issue work computer… which is Excel.
This learning guide is meant to serve as the basis for a half-day workshop to help healthcare administrators use their data more effectively and efficiently with Excel. The topics covered were influenced by my nearly three years of experience as an analyst at a hospital. It was a rough gig — if I knew then what I know now about data and Excel, my hope is that I could have gotten out of the building more (and perhaps earlier).
You can use this outline to design and deliver your own training, or get in touch to partner on delivery.

One last thank you healthcare administrators for keeping our medical facilities ticking. If I can help your practice in any way, don’t hesitate to get in touch.
