I recently participated in a roundtable hosted by analytics community Enterprise DNA on the topic of BI and analytics consulting.
I’ve been operating independently for about three years through Stringfest Analytics. It’s great. In particular, I’ve learned so much about business and branding that I likely would not have as an employed data professional. It’s not easy, but it’s compelling.
Particularly as the future of work continues to evolve in the face of the ongoing pandemic, you may be wondering what it might take to transition from a data analyst or data scientist position to running your own BI consulting firm?
The panel is led by Enterprise DNA’s Chief Content Officer Brian Julius and features three data professionals who have successfully made that leap:
- Paul Lucassen, founder of Lucassen Consulting
- Rick de Groot, founder of Gorilla BI
- George Mount, founder of Stringfest Analytics (yep, that guy…)
We talked about a wide range of issues including: what prompted them to make that change, challenges they faced along the way, advice they would give to people looking to make a similar move, ways in which they’ve helped clients see their business in a completely different way, how the pandemic has affected the nature of their business, the importance of sharing within the larger data community, and predictions about where they see data analytics headed in the future.
